Temperance Movement | Since 1951

ALCOHOLISM IS A DISEASE. WE COME TOGETHER TO OVERCOME ALCOHOLISM.

Temperance Movement was started in 1951 by P. C. George Sir. Temperance Movement organises talks and classes on alcohol and substance abuse in association with Mandiram Hospital and Counselling Centre. This Movement works very closely with MadyaMukthi – a team of people who call themselves ‘Once Alcoholics’ . They often meet together at Mandiram Community Hall and  reaffirm their pledge as an Alcoholic Anonymous (AA) member.

What We Do !

01.

— AA Meetings

Every Saturday, MadyaMukthi team and Mandiram volunteers meet in Mandiram Community Hall. In the meeting, every member confess his past struggles with alcohol; peace and  prosperity he experiences now; and discuss various ways to bring more alcoholics into this group.

02.

— Create Awareness

Right from the time of our Founders, we knew alcohol is a social evil and its rapid spread should be prevented. The most effective way to prevent alcohol abuse is to create awareness about its ill effects among the public. We propagate the idea of  ‘alcohol abstinence’  in the society.

03.

— Our Associates

We associate with Mandirams Society’s Counselling Centre, Psychiatric Department of Mandiram Hospital, Mochana De-Addiction Centre and TRADA. We work together in our fight against alcohol which also includes influencing governments while framing policies on alcohol.

We Care For !

Mutual Aid Fellowship

It is fellowship of ‘Once Alcoholics’ who suffered once; their families and mandiram volunteers. Here, there is no differentiation in terms caste, colour, religion beliefs or wealth. We all come together and help each other to stay away from Alcohol.

Away from Alcohol

Every day in AA meetings ‘Once Alcoholics’ openly vouch – ‘ I have not consumed Alcohol today ‘ and others acknowledge. Every now and then, ‘ Once Alcoholics’ and their families along with other members celebrate the milestones of their  days of abstinence .

Help Other Alcoholics

Along with promoting abstinence, helping others to come out of their drinking habits is a way of life in Temperance Movement. Members devise their own ways and strategies to track down and bring other alcoholics to the meetings and reform them.

Late Sri. P C. George  ( respectfully referred as P. C. George Sir ) who founded the Mandirams  was very much concerned about the well-being of the people. He used to visit the neighbouring places of Manganam at regular intervals for leading Bible study groups and for collecting donations for running the Mandirams. He visited hundreds of houses in and around Manganam time and again. So he had a very clear idea of houses where family members were upset and who were longing for peace and harmony  at their households. He observed that the root cause for all such incidents was nothing but addiction of male members of such families to toddy. He was aware of many youths who had to suffer much due to constant consumption of toddy. George Sir realised that this bad habit was spreading like cancer in and around Manganam. Many families had turned out to be a real hell as a result of this social evil. This gave much pain to George Sir who started thinking how such addicts can be taught about the ill effects of toddy and thus save their families in distress. “Temperance Movement” was the result of his thoughts and prayers in this direction for about 2 years.    Read More >>
